Cyclone Tauktae will weaken soon into a depression; killed over 29, causing damage

The India Meteorological Department on Wednesday morning shared a positive news to which people of coastal areas. The department informed that Cyclone Tauktae will weaken into a Depression in the next few hours.

The IMD, weather bulletin released at 1 AM stated, ?The Deep Depression ?Tauktae? over Gujarat region moved north-northeastwards with a speed of about 20 kmph during past six hours and lay centred at 2330 hours IST of May 18, 2021, near latitude 24.0°N and longitude 73.0°E, about 110 km north-northeast of Ahmedabad,? in one of it?s string of updates.

The weather department further said that it is very likely to move north-northeastwards and weaken gradually into a Depression in the next few hours. The weather department gave a rainfall warning over Gujarat and Rajasthan.

 

The Met department said ?Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls isolated places very likely over Gujarat region and Saurashtra during next 12 hours. Heavy falls at isolated places over north Rajasthan likely on May 19.? Notably, the storm ?Tauktae? standsoff to be the strongest storm to impact Gujarat in over two decades. The storm battered several parts of the coastal states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala. In a trail of destruction it uprooted electric poles and trees, and damaged several houses and roads, before weakening on landfall in Gujarat on Monday night. The powerful cyclone has so far reportedly taken over 29 lives.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Gujarat and Diu on Wednesday to review the situation and damage caused by Cyclone Tauktae. He will also hold a review meeting with Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani after the aerial survey.
