CHENNAI: Linda Fruhvirtova, a 19-year-old from the Czech Republic, defeated third-seeded Magda Linette of Poland in three sets to win her first WTA Tour singles title and cap off a historic week in Chennai. To win her maiden championship on the tour, the 17-year-old Fruhvirtova defeated No. 3 seed Linette 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the final. In the third set, Fruhvirtova trailed 4-1 before winning the final five games.

It took Fruhvirtova two and a half hours to defeat Linette, a two-time singles champion on the tour, after coming from behind. The teen avenged a defeat Linette suffered in their lone previous encounter in Cleveland the previous year.

Fruhvirtova is the youngest WTA Tour champion of the year to date at the age of 17 years, 141 days. She is the tour's youngest singles champion since Coco Gauff, who was 17 years, 70 days old when she won Parma last year.

According to a report on the WTA Tour website, Fruhvirtova's match on Sunday was a daring victory as she saved seven of the nine break points she faced and converted half of her six break points.

With a forehand winner off a drop ball, Linette broke the tie at 5-4 in the opening set. Then, seizing the chance, she held serve at love to take the set. With her first break of the day, Fruhvirtova turned the match around and took a 5-3 lead in the second set. By consolidating in the following game and finishing a set in which she didn't encounter a break point, she evened the score.

Following a forehand winner that handed Linette the opening break of the decisive for a 3-1 advantage, the Pole appeared to be in control after holding for a 4-1 advantage. According to the article, Fruhvirtova utilised strong hitting to come back on serve at 4-3 and then the Czech youngster pushed ahead by a break with a strong return at 5-4.

Fruhvirtova held onto that advantage the entire match, scoring her maiden championship point in the next match to win her first championship.
