All About Dahi Handi 2024

Date and Timing: Dahi Handi will be celebrated on August 27, 2024, the day after Krishna Janmashtami. Traditionally, it is observed on the ninth day of Krishna Paksha (the waning phase of the moon) in the month of Bhadrapada. While the festival is most commonly celebrated in Gujarat and Maharashtra, it is gaining popularity throughout India.

Significance: Dahi Handi commemorates the joyful and mischievous acts of young Krishna. Known for his love of butter, Krishna would often steal it from homes. During the festival, clay pots filled with butter or curd, called handis, are hung high. Participants form human pyramids to break these pots, emulating Krishna’s playful theft. This act symbolizes the bringing of joy and prosperity to homes and communities.

Historical Background: According to ancient texts, during the Dwapar Yuga, Krishna and his friends used to steal butter from the gopis (milkmaids) and share it among themselves. To prevent them from reaching the butter, the gopis would hang the pots high. Despite their efforts, Krishna and his friends would still manage to steal and enjoy the butter. Dahi Handi celebrates these delightful and mischievous exploits of Krishna’s childhood.
