New Delhi: A report titled "Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability" of working group II of the Int Ragovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) came out in March. The report had already indicated that Asia is facing a high human mortality rate due to extreme heat. The authors of the research had said that climate change is further increasing threats such as heatwaves, floods, droughts and air pollutants in Asia.

Due to these dangers, vector-borne and water-borne diseases, undernutrition, mental disorders and allergic diseases are on the rise in Asia. In addition to the all-cause mortality rate, high temperatures are accompanied by deaths from infections, respiratory illnesses, diabetes and infectious diseases, as well as infant mortality. The report said heavy rains and a rise in temperatures will increase the risk of diarrhoeal diseases, dengue fever and malaria in tropical and subtropical Asia. A consistently warmer day and a sharper heatwave will increase heat-related deaths in Asia.

The report for policymakers also said, "The impact of climate and weather extremes on ecosystems, people, settlements and infrastructure has been seen extensively. This increase has resulted from climate change, including warm extremes on land and at sea, heavy rainfall events, droughts and severe summer seasons.'' These heatwaves will almost certainly increase mortality and morbidity, degrade the ecosystem, and lead to crop failure and loss of productivity and economic output.
