TURKEY: A powerful explosion rocked an explosives plant in northwestern Turkey on Tuesday, resulting in the tragic death of 13 people and leaving four others injured. The cause of the blast remains unclear, and authorities have launched a full investigation. The plant, which specializes in the manufacturing of munitions and explosives, was severely damaged, with a section of the building collapsing under the force of the explosion. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene as officials work to determine the cause of the devastating incident.

Local officials stated that the explosion, which happened at 8:25 AM local time (5:25 AM GMT), resulted in a portion of the plant collapsing. The victims were employees of the plant, with 12 confirmed dead and four injured, though the injured are not reported to be in critical condition.

Footage from the scene revealed debris, including shards of glass and metal, scattered across the area. Ambulances were seen standing by as emergency services responded swiftly. The blaze caused by the explosion was brought under control, and officials confirmed that there were no employees left inside the factory after the incident.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya emphasized that the cause of the explosion was still unclear.  Authorities have ruled out sabotage, and a thorough investigation is currently underway. Local officials mentioned "technical reasons" as a possible cause, but no further details have been provided.

The explosives plant manufactures munitions, explosives, and flares for both the domestic and international markets. Witnesses described the scene as "like a battlefield," with parts of the building heavily damaged.

Security forces have secured the area to prevent any further incidents, and civilians, along with members of the press, have been restricted from approaching the site. As a precaution, authorities remain on alert for the possibility of a second explosion.

This tragic incident follows a history of explosions at industrial sites in Turkey. In 2020, a fireworks factory explosion in northwestern Turkey killed seven people and injured 127 others. Another explosion at a military explosives factory in 2023 claimed the lives of five people.

Turkey has become a significant exporter of defense equipment, particularly drones, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan being a strong proponent of the defense industry.
