Former President of the country, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, is known as Missile man in the world. He was born on October 15, 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. His life gives us a different motivation. After studying at Madarsa, Kalam used to sell newspapers. The son of a poor fisherman had learnt the tricks of being self-sufficient as a child.
He later studied physics and aerospace engineering and reached the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and made a significant contribution to India's missile programme. Thereafter, from 2002 to 2007, Dr. Abul Kalam Azad served the nation as the 11th President of India. But on July 27, 2015, we all lost a precious gem.
Dr Kalam was addressing the students at IIM Shillong. During his speech, he suffered a heart attack, was rushed to the hospital, but the doctor could do nothing, and at the age of 83, Kalam left the world. Kalam was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 1981, followed by Padma Vibhushan in 1990 and Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour in 1997. Dr. Abdul Kalam Azad's important contribution to the country will always be memorable.
