Thimphu: In an effort to strengthen their longstanding relationship, India and Bhutan have signed six agreements covering various sectors, including energy, digital connectivity, and space cooperation. The agreements were finalized during a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bhutanese counterpart Tshering Tobgay in Thimphu.

Prime Minister Modi's visit to Bhutan comes at a crucial time, underscoring the significance that India attaches to its ties with Thimphu, especially amidst China's attempts to resolve a border dispute with Bhutan. This visit, originally scheduled earlier but postponed due to weather conditions, highlights India's commitment to bolstering its relationship with Bhutan.

During the visit, Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck conferred the Order of Druk Gyalpo, the highest honor of the country, on Prime Minister Modi. This gesture reflects the deep bond between the two nations.

The discussions between Prime Ministers Modi and Tobgay focused on enhancing cooperation across various sectors, including renewable energy, agriculture, environment, forestry, youth exchanges, and tourism. Both leaders reaffirmed the exceptional trust and goodwill that characterizes the bilateral relationship.

The agreements signed encompass diverse areas of collaboration. An MoU on petroleum, oil, and lubricants will facilitate the supply of essential items from India to Bhutan. Additionally, a Joint Plan of Action on Space Cooperation outlines a roadmap for joint initiatives and training programs in the field of space technology.

Furthermore, agreements on rail links, food safety standards, energy conservation, and cooperation in sports and youth affairs were also finalized. These agreements aim to promote mutual prosperity and development.

The Order of Druk Gyalpo conferred upon Prime Minister Modi underscores his significant contributions to strengthening India-Bhutan ties. The citation accompanying the honor lauds Modi's leadership, commitment to environmental conservation, and support for Bhutan's national vision.

India's unwavering support for Bhutan's development is evident from its substantial financial assistance, with a significant allocation in India's budget for Bhutan's five-year plans. During Tobgay's recent visit to India, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India's commitment to supporting Bhutan's economic development and infrastructure projects.

As Bhutan navigates its border dispute with China, India continues to closely monitor the situation. India's partnership with Bhutan remains a cornerstone of its "Neighborhood First" policy, aimed at fostering regional stability and prosperity.
