New Delhi: The central government has decided to ban the import of 101 materials to encourage defense-related manufacturing in the country. Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh announced this on Sunday. There is a plan to ban the import of these goods with production in the country between 2020 and 2024. This ambitious move of the central government will reduce dependence from imports and increase the production of defense products in the country, which will also open new avenues of employment.

The Union Defense Minister said that the Ministry of Defense is now ready to take major steps to promote the Self-reliant India initiative. The ban on the import of 101 defense materials will provide huge opportunities to the Indian defense industry. The list of 101 items marked for import restrictions includes cannon, assault rifle, transport aircraft. Rajnath Singh said that the three forces contracted these goods for Rs 3.5 lakh crore between April 2015 and August 2020 under 260 schemes. It is estimated that in the next 6-7 years, the domestic industry will receive contracts worth about Rs 4 lakh crore.

Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has stated that necessary steps will be taken to ensure the domestic production deadline for military goods marked for the ban on imports. More defense equipment will be phased out for ban on import.
