New Delhi: The Union Defence Ministry has taken a big step forward towards becoming 'self-reliant' in terms of manufacturing and testing of weapons. The Defence Ministry has sent a proposal to the Union Cabinet to set up a nodal umbrella body to undertake testing and certification of weapons. The body will undertake certification of defence types of equipment manufactured by private sector companies.

It was mentioned in the Union Budget this year that an independent testing and certification body would be created. This could prove to be a big step for private defence equipment manufacturing companies in India. This may also increase the supply of defence equipment from private companies. This new institution will take care of whether any private company is getting the equipment certified in the wrong way. It is not that there is a mess going on in a government laboratory so that low-quality weapons are approved for domestic use or export.

Let us know that in this year's budget, 68 per cent of the defence budget has been earmarked for domestic production. Private industry can take advantage of this. Many companies have also started manufacturing armoured drones, autonomous combat vehicles, aircraft engines, SPV, etc.
