New Delhi: A Delhi court will today hear a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case in opposition to Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, who is accused of setting off a crowd to take life of Sikhs. District Judge Poonam A Bamba is slated to record the statement of a key prosecution witness in the case. Sajjan Kumar is also directed to appear before the court. Earlier, the Delhi High Court in his verdict had convicted Kumar and sentenced to life imprisonment for "remainder of his natural life" in another 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, asserting the riots were a "crime against humanity" pulled off by those who enjoyed "political support" and help by an "indifferent" law enforcement agency.

Worth mention here Sajjan Kumar has resigned from the Congress by submitting his resignation from the primary membership of the grand old party. He had penned down to the party president Rahul Gandhi "I tender my resignation with immediate effect from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress in the wake of the judgement of the hon'ble high court of Delhi against me."

It is noted that the case was transferred from the Karkardooma court to the Patiala House court here by the Delhi High Court, which had ordered the district judge to video record the proceedings at the cost of the accused. Kumar and two other accused, Brahmanand Gupta and Ved Prakash, had stated that they were all set to bear the operating cost of the videography proceedings.
