New Delhi: The Delhi High Court, on Thursday, urged the Election Commission of India to promptly reach a decision, preferably within eight weeks, on the notice issued to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi concerning his alleged "pickpocket" remark targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a speech delivered last month. The court, presided over by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Mini Pushkarna, was addressing a public interest litigation seeking action against Gandhi and the establishment of guidelines to prevent such "malpractice" by political leaders.

While acknowledging that the alleged statements were "not in good taste," the court noted that the Election Commission (EC) was actively examining the matter and had issued a notice to Gandhi. In response to the lack of a reply within the stipulated deadline, the court directed the EC to expedite its decision, emphasizing a preference for resolution within eight weeks. The court highlighted that the poll panel, in its notice dated November 23, had pledged to take appropriate action in the matter.

Petitioner Bharat Nagar apprised the high court that Gandhi, on November 22, made a speech leveling "heinous allegations" against individuals holding the "highest governmental positions," including the prime minister, referring to him as a "pickpocket." This development underscores the ongoing legal scrutiny of political discourse and the responsibilities of public figures in maintaining decorum and ethical standards in their public statements.
