New Delhi: The Delhi government, led by the Aam Aadmi Party, is contemplating a change in the pattern of retail sales of liquor in the capital and raising excise duty. If the government takes such a step, the price of alcohol in Delhi will go to record highs. According to the media report, an expert committee constituted by the Delhi government has suggested that the price of alcohol should be increased by 50%.
The committee has also suggested that the revenue from Indian liquor, foreign liquor and country liquor should be increased to Rs 8,000 crore, which is currently Rs 5,000 crore. The Expert Committee has suggested the Delhi government to increase the price of liquor by 50% and increase the number of dry days in the state so as to increase the sale of liquor to increase revenue. According to the report, the Delhi government currently gets revenue of Rs 46 crore from brand registration, Rs 4,507 crore from Indian liquor, Rs 240 crore from foreign liquor and Rs 210 crore from domestic liquor.
The state government has earned Rs 170 crore as license fees from restaurants and bar serving bars, Rs 300 crore from export and permit fees and Rs 40 crore from retail licenses. Overall, the government's income from liquor is currently being Rs 5,068.70 crore, which the state government wants to increase to about Rs 8,000 crore.
