New Delhi: Umar Khalid, accused of anti-Hindu riots that broke out in the national capital Delhi, was refused regular bail by the Delhi High Court in October 2022. Now he has taken interim bail for two weeks citing his 'sister's marriage'. A hearing in this regard is going to be held on November 25 in the Karkardooma court. By the way, Umar Khalid is not the first accused in the Delhi riots to seek bail on such grounds. Rifaqat Ali and Safoora Zargar have also taken bail by giving similar statements.

According to reports, Umar Khalid filed this petition on 18 November 2022 in Karkardooma Court. Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat is hearing Khalid's petition. On the petition, the court has asked the prosecution to respond. Umar Khalid has said that his younger sister's marriage is on December 28. Other rituals related to Nikah are on 26 and 27 December. Therefore, he should be granted interim bail from 20 December 2022 to 3 January 2023.

On October 18 also, Umar Khalid moved a bail plea, which was turned down after the prosecution protested. Khalid was arrested by the police in September 2020 in connection with the Delhi anti-Hindu riots. He is booked under UAPA for his active role in the riots. Even in April 2022, the Delhi High Court refused to grant bail to Umar Khalid, the main conspirator of the riots. During this, the High Court considered his statement as provocative and controversial.

On 23 June 2020, the Delhi High Court granted bail to pregnant Safoora Zargar on 'humanity grounds'. Before that her bail plea was rejected three times. Similarly, in September 2021, Rifaqat Ali, another accused in the Delhi riots, was granted bail for two weeks for the marriage of his niece. Rifaqat Ali was also granted bail by Karkardooma Court's Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat and the same judge is also hearing the petition of Umar Khalid. 

What was the anti-Hindu riots of Delhi?

Let us tell you that the 2020 riots are called anti-Hindu riots because Tahir Hussain, the main accused of the riots and former councilor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has himself confessed that he hatched this conspiracy to teach a lesson to Hindus. He had broken the CCTVs of the area and asked his people to collect sticks and weapons. While, on the other hand, the Hindus had no idea that preparations were going on for several days to attack them. Unconcerned about any untoward incident, when Hindus were attacked, they could not even save themselves. Hindu shops were set on fire, looted and stone pelting started. 53 people died in these riots, while more than 200 were injured. Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma was also murdered in the same anti-Hindu riots, 400 knife marks were found on his body. That is, the hatred was to such an extent that, even after death, Ankit was constantly being stabbed, his body was found in a drain located near the house of former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain.
