New Delhi: The Army Hospital (Research and Referral) in the national capital on October 8, 2022, underwent a complex treatment of a 15-year-old boy suffering from heart disease. Doctors said the baby was suffering from a complex congenital heart defect (CHD) since birth. For this, he had undergone two open heart surgeries in childhood. An artificial tube was installed in his heart, so that blood could be supplied from the heart to the lungs.
Doctors at the Army Hospital have informed that time passed and this tube started to end. The doctors decided to perform transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation so that there was no need to perform open heart surgery for the third time. It is a complex process of treatment, in which there is no major surgery i.e. the heart is not treated by making an incision on the chest. In this treatment method, a small cut is made below the waist. After that, the valve is applied to the heart through a thin tube to the heart. For the first time, such complex treatment has been done in a government military hospital. The surgery was led by Colonel Harmeet Singh Arora, a paediatric interventional cardiologist. Vice Admiral Rajat Dutta, Director General, Armed Forces Medical Services, was also consulted in the operation. Because he is the senior-most cardiologist present in the three services.
Colonel Sandeep Dhingra has done this complex treatment. He has told that for the first time such surgery has been done in this hospital. With this help, we can easily treat children suffering from CHD. Children will not have to undergo open heart surgery. This will lead to a non-surgical procedure and the beginning of time. After this treatment, Lieutenant General Ashok Jindal, Commandant of Army Hospital (R&R), congratulated the team of doctors.
