New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday (October 13) said that heavy rains are expected to continue over Tamil Nadu for the next five days and in interior Karnataka for the next two days. The Imd has also said that conditions are expected to be favourable for the withdrawal of monsoon from some more parts of northwest and central India during the next three to four days.
According to the latest updates of IMD, cyclonic circulation persists over the lower troposphere levels of the Comorin region and neighbourhood. A cyclonic circulation persists over the north Andaman Sea into lower troposphere levels. It is expected to move westwards during the next 2-3 days. Due to these weather systems, heavy rain and thundershowers are expected in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal between October 13 and 17. Along with this, there is a possibility of rain in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya today. Dry weather is likely to prevail over most parts of northwest India from tomorrow i.e. October 14.
In the last few years, the withdrawal of monsoon has been greatly delayed and its date has been extended till the end of October. This means that farmers have to change their sowing programme. Monsoon is very important for India, as about 60 per cent of the country's total arable land is lacking in irrigation and half of its population is dependent on agriculture.
