New Delhi: On Saturday, Delhi Water Minister Atishi issued a directive to Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, instructing him to address the widespread sewer overflow issues across Delhi. The move comes in response to numerous complaints from residents about sewer overflows affecting various parts of the city.

In her letter, Atishi asked Chief Secretary Kumar to "oversee and resolve any problems related to sewer overflow across Delhi" and to "take strict action against officials whose negligence has contributed to the crisis." She highlighted that areas such as Patparganj village, Shashi Garden, Kichripur, Subhash Park, Raj Nagar Part 2, Satya Niketan, RK Puram, Z block Ranjeet Nagar, Faridpuri, Budh Nagar, Pandav Nagar, WEA Karol Bagh, Garhi Village, Pillanji Village, Chandrawal Village, Kotla Village, Sarai Kale Khan Basti, Zamrudpur, and Chirag Dilli are among the worst affected by these issues.

Atishi expressed concern that the overflowing sewers are contaminating drinking water, posing a significant risk to public health. She warned that if the situation is not addressed promptly, it could lead to a serious health crisis.

The minister also criticized the lack of coordination and the ongoing blame game between different departments, including the Urban Development Department, Delhi Jal Board, and the Finance Department. This disarray, she said, is exacerbating the problem and negatively impacting Delhi's residents.

Atishi urged Chief Secretary Kumar, as the head of the bureaucracy, to resolve these internal conflicts and ensure effective action to mitigate the sewer overflow issues.
