New Delhi: The arrival of monsoon is likely to be further delayed in the country's capital Delhi and surrounding areas. The monsoon is taking entry in the break spell from June 29. Heavy rain is expected in northeast India by at least July 5 and rain may continue to decline in the rest of India.

The Met department had earlier predicted that the monsoon may arrive on June 15, 12 days ahead of schedule due to wind conditions in Delhi. The monsoon usually reaches Delhi by June 27 and becomes active across the country by July 8. But it is currently being projected to come late. The Met department (IMD) had said on June 24 that parts of Delhi and Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, would have to wait till July for monsoon rains.

The Met department had also said in a statement that the current weather conditions and forecasts indicate that the southwest monsoon is unlikely to increase in Rajasthan, western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and other parts of Punjab by next week. Light to moderate levels of rain and thundershowers are likely to occur at various places in northwest India by June 30.
