The Delhi-Mumbai expressway project, aimed at revolutionizing Indian infrastructure, is experiencing considerable setbacks primarily due to land-related obstacles in Gujarat, reports read. Recent updates indicate that bidding for two crucial segments, totaling 62 kilometers, only began in November 2023. Construction on one segment commenced in April this year, while the other started just this month.

Originally scheduled for completion by January 2023, the project has faced multiple delays, pushing the revised deadline to March 2024, which has also been missed. Sources reveal that each segment requires a minimum of eighteen months for construction. To accelerate progress, the project was divided into smaller 'packages' for quicker execution. Officials assure that ongoing issues with land acquisition are actively being resolved.

Currently, approximately 630 kilometers out of the total 1,386 kilometers have been opened to traffic across various segments. Noteworthy stretches include Sohna-Dausa-Sawai Madhopur (293 km) and Jhalawar-MP/Gujarat border (245 km). Authorities are confident that the 845-kilometer stretch from Sohna to Vadodara will be fully operational by March 2025. Subsequent sections linking to Mumbai's JNPT port, Jewar Airport in Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi's DND Flyway are expected to follow.

Former National Highways Authority officials stress the crucial role of timely land acquisition in such projects, highlighting proactive measures taken by state governments. A former official commented, "Land availability remains the primary challenge in executing road projects, particularly for greenfield expressways."

In a recent update, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways disclosed contracts worth Rs 3,633 crore and Rs 2,287 crore for constructing 35 km in Valsad and 27 km in Navsari districts, respectively. However, construction has yet to begin in these areas.

Despite significant progress in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, the slower pace in Gujarat remains a concern. With work now underway across all segments, officials are optimistic that the entire expressway will be operational by October next year, greatly improving connectivity between Delhi and Mumbai.
