These days the movies of the south are breaking all the records. The Telugu movie Kantara is winning hearts. The movie sees a phenomenal run at the box office. In Karnataka, the film has grossed ₹58 crores since its release and is being dubbed and released in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. The film has even surpassed the blockbuster Ponniyin Selvan: I and Chiranjeevi's GodFather. On the one hand, the movie is receiving very good reviews and fans are showering their love on him, but some people also criticizing him.
Popular author Devdutt Pattnaik known for his take on mythological texts and figures has questioned the release of the film Kantara. He took to his Twitter to question whether the film will really work with a Hindi-speaking audience. The author tweeted, "Will the concept of Bhuta, venerated in Tulunadu, Karnataka, make sense to Hindi-speakers who see themselves as ALPHA in the Hindu world?"
Reacting to this Hombale Films the production house behind Kantara has written, "India is a land of diversity n vivid culture. We aimed to achieve a certain effect by mirroring our Indian culture across boundaries and wanted the world to see our distinct cultural identity. Believe we’ve achieved that. Ek Bharat Shreshth Bharat."
Speaking about the film, Kantara, which translates to the mystical forest, tells the story of a local demigod (Bhoota) who trades forest land to the tribe's people with a king in 1870 in exchange for happiness. Many years later, when the king’s son grows greedy and wants the land back, he dies due to the wrath of Bhoota.
