The norms for H-1B are going to be strict in the coming days. The Trump administration plans to make it more difficult for US companies to hire foreign workers on H-1B non-immigrant short-term visas, by narrowing the meaning of “speciality” occupation and increasing minimum wages for the workers. Both proposals are designed to ensure American workers were not dismissed or denied jobs because of cheaper foreign workers.

Bashers of the H-1B programme contend that US companies are hiring foreign employees to displace American ones and that they are not highly skilled as they ought to be. More than 70% of these H-1B visas go to Indians who are hired by US tech giants such as Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Apple, and US subsidiaries of Indian IT companies such as Infosys, Wipro and TCS. Management office and Budget of the White House has posted a notice on its website stating that a review was underway of H-1B and other visas, but no details were available. The government would expect to have them in place for maximum influence before elections on November 3.

A leading American daily reported that these steps were being fast-tracked and the final bunch of orders could also include constraints on international students. The H-1B visa application has been on the cross-hairs of the Trump administration from the starting and it has been modified and altered incrementally since, through administrative orders. It was halted temporarily in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic to assure that Americans had the first shot at jobs that were becoming available from the lockdown. The president has also suspended all immigration till December.
