Lucknow: The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday (April 5, 2022) refused to grant bail to Irfan Sheikh, alias Irfan Khan, involved in forcibly converting hearing and speaking disabled students to Islam at a sign language training and research centre in New Delhi. Sheikh is a symbolic interpreter appointed by the government in the institute. Police investigations have revealed that the conversion racket of Umar Gautam, which was unearthed in June-July 2021 in UP, is linked to the conversion racket. Sheikh Umar was reportedly a key link in Gautam's racket.

Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Brij Raj Singh in their order said, "Keeping in view the facts and circumstances relating to the case, the investigating officer has gone to the bottom of the matter and collected concrete evidence against the petitioner. In connivance with accused Umar Gautam and others, the petitioner misused his position while working as an interpreter at the Sign Language Training and Research Centre, indulging in conversion and anti-national activities. In such a situation, on what grounds can we grant bail to the petitioner?''

Against the verdict given by the Special Judge of the Additional District Sessions Court, Lucknow, Sheikh, in his petition, had claimed that he was being implicated in a conspiracy in the case. He also said that his name is not there in the FIR. At the same time, his lawyer has claimed that the trial court had rejected his bail plea only on the basis of conjectures and the case was inferred without considering the statements of all the witnesses. To this, the court said that his name was not there in the FIR, but his involvement has come to light on the basis of the statements of co-accused Rahul Bhola and Jahangir in the case. The investigating agency found that the petitioner Irfan Khan had played a key role in the conversion of differently-abled children by coming under the inducement and wrongful manner.

Let us know that in Noida in Uttar Pradesh, the ATS team had arrested two maulanas who had converted. One of them was Umar Gautam, who was already a Hindu. He converted to Islam about 30 years ago. Since then, he had been running an Islamic Medicine Centre in Delhi's Jamia Nagar area. From here the whole game of conversion was operated.
