Chennai: The main opposition DMK in Tamil Nadu on Sunday accused the Center of turning the Jammu and Kashmir region into a huge prison. The party demanded the release of all the arrested leaders, including former CM Farooq Abdullah. Criticizing the Centre's move on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir, the party, headed by MK Stalin, has demanded that the Center "respect the sentiments of the people." The party has moved a resolution in its general council meeting.

The resolution criticized neutralizing Section 370 and dividing the region into two union territories without the approval of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly and without knowing the opinion of the people there. At the same time, it said that the General Council condemned the conversion of the area into a huge prison and betrayal of people, arrest of leaders like Farooq Abdullah and house arrest.

In the meeting chaired by Stalin, the party called for the immediate release of all those arrested from the Center and respect the human rights, sentiments of the Kashmiri people and democratic values. The DMK also accused the Center of withdrawing the draft National Education Policy (DNEP) 2019, alleging that it was an attempt to impose Hindi and Sanskrit.
