CHENNAI: There have been Protests inside the DMK over the underrepresentation of minority groups, particularly Muslims, in the recently reconstituted party district committees.
The party's unilateral nominations for the committees in place of elections infuriated the cadres and several district officials because it put individuals who had publicly voiced their disagreements with the local district leadership completely out of the running.
There was an underrepresentation of minority communities in the committees, as per information collected by a number of leaders in district committees that were reformed.
It is being said that a number of disgruntled leaders from all over the state were preparing to meet with the party's president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to voice their complaints and warn him that the party would suffer in the lead-up to the general elections if this matter was not handled with urgency.
It is said, the party's powerful figures denied the workers a fair chance to select members for their district committees and instead imposed district committee members chosen by the powerful figures of the party.
The cadres and local leaders regret that certain party hoppers received excessive representation while devoted party cadres received the cold shoulder, and that this was because the state leadership received the wrong feedback.
Despite the Muslim community's significant presence in the region, a senior leader of the party noted that there is no Muslim representation on the Coimbatore South district committee. The party would eventually suffer a setback, according to the leader.
The cadres and local leaders emphasised that it was made clear when the state leadership called for applications for district-level positions that two general council members would be elected for each Assembly constituency, and that candidates could submit nominations in accordance with the number of Assembly seats in their districts.
Each Assembly constituency would receive one executive committee member. However, there were 22 members of the Executive committee and 73 additional general council members that disobeyed the party rule when the results were revealed.
