Often, some people sit with their legs straight, while others keep their feet on top of their feet. But recently, an expert has explained why people should not sit with their legs crossed and what negative effects this habit can have on the body in the long run. People like to sit with their legs crossed in two ways. In the first by keeping the knee on the knee and in the second by crossing the ankles. According to experts, sitting in the cross-legged position can have harmful effects on the body. According to a report received, it is estimated that 62 percent of people cross their legs from left to right, 26 percent cross their legs from right to left, and 12 percent can sit either way. Director of the Clinical Anatomy Learning Centre at Lancaster University, Prof. Professor Adam Taylor reveals why you should avoid sitting with crossed legs.
Here is the reason: -
1- Misalignment of the skeleton:-
According to the study, sitting cross-legged can lead to misalignment of the hips. Apart from this, due to leg crossing, pain can also occur in the bones of the spine and shoulders after a long time. Cross-legged sitting can cause changes in the neck bone, which in turn can affect the lower part of the neck and lower back. Sitting cross-legged can lead to muscle imbalances between the right and left sides of the body, which can lead to weakness, stiffness, and scoliosis from the leg formation.
2: Sperm production
According to the study, sitting with one leg crossed can affect a man's sperm count. The temperature of the testicles already rises by 2 °C (35.6 °F) during normal sitting, and this figure rises to 3.5 °C (38.3 °F) when one sits in a cross-legged position. Studies show that high temperatures can lower a man's sperm count and quality, making it difficult to conceive naturally. However, men may be less likely to cross their legs than women. According to Professor Taylor, 'Because of the difference in anatomy between men and women, it is probably easier for women to sit cross-legged because men's hip joints are stiffer than women's.'
3: Blood Clots:
By sitting with the legs crossed, stress is put on the blood vessels of the lower parts of the body, and that stress slows down the movement of blood through the veins, due to which blood clots are formed. Blood clots look like a gel (a thickened substance) of blood, and they form when blood changes from a liquid to a solid. Blood clots can be a normal physiological response, such as when the skin is cut or scraped, because they prevent excessive bleeding. But 'if someone sits with the legs crossed, then blood clots can get frozen later on, which can cause many physical problems. Keeping this in mind, do not sit still in the same position for too long and be active regularly.
