Days after the Delhi government declared that all diesel vehicles older than ten years will be permanently banned on January 1, the state's transportation department has created an alternative for customers to convert their old cars to electric vehicles.
The state government has sought the help of six electric kit manufacturers to convert obsolete gasoline and diesel automobiles. In the following days, more firms are anticipated to be empanelled.
Electric kits with various battery capacities and fuel types are available from manufacturers who have been approved by the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) for two, three, and four-wheelers. ICAT is one of the country's most respected testing certification, research, and development organisations.
Electric kits from Etrio Automobile, one of the Delhi government's empanelled manufacturers, can be used on both petrol and diesel four-wheelers. It will have a 17.3 kW battery with a range of over 106 kilometres. Booma Innovative Transport Solutions Renewable, on the other hand, will offer an electric kit for petrol two-wheelers. It will have a 2.016 kW battery capacity and a range of up to 65.86 kilometres.
In addition to Etrio and Booma, the list includes 3EV Industries, Zero 21 Renewable Energy Solutions, and VELEV Motors India Pvt Ltd. Converting existing diesel and petrol cars to electric vehicles is expected to cost between 3 lakh and 5 lakh, depending on battery capacity and range, according to experts. However, depending on the type of battery and manufacturer, retrofitting two and three-wheelers will be far less expensive.
Customers who are affected by the National Green Tribunal's (NGT) ban on diesel and petrol vehicles over 10 and 15 years old in Delhi NCR would benefit from the possibility to convert existing automobiles into EVs. The Delhi government will deregister all diesel vehicles that will reach ten years of age on January 1 next year, in accordance with the NGT prohibition. It will also issue NOCs to these vehicles, allowing them to be re-registered in other states.
