Dhaka: Opposing any changes in Hindu laws, a group of minority leaders has requested the Sheikh Hasina-led Bangladesh government not to reform the laws. They also demanded action against Mahfouz Anam, editor of The Daily Star, and his wife Shaheen Anam and executive director of the Manusher Johnny Foundation, accusing them of hurting the religious sentiments of the Hindu community and creating chaos in their families.

Anam has made a proposal to the Law Commission to improve Hindu law. Shaheen Anam and Mahfouz Anam have been accused of conspiring to change the scripture rules of the Hindu family. Leaders of the organization 'Bangladesh National Hindu Grand Alliance' and some other organizations of the Hindu community held a press conference on Sunday. Gobind Chandra Pramanik, a lawyer, and general secretary, Bangladesh National Hindu Grand Alliance announced four demands placed before the government.

He requested the government to make an announcement by August 30 assuring "no reforms and changes" in Hindu law. Legal action should be taken against Shaheen Anam and some NGOs who are creating "chaos" in Hindu society and families by conducting anti-social and anti-religious activities, he added. He demanded that Shaheen Anam and his associates should apologize to the 'Hindu community.' He warned to launch a mass signature campaign across the country.
