BHOPAL:Protests erupted in Madhya Pradesh, particularly in Bhopal, against amendments made to the hit-and-run law in the country. Bus and truck drivers staged a widespread strike across the state to oppose the legislation, causing a standstill in the state capital and significantly impacting daily life while people celebrated New Year's Day.

The Madhya Pradesh Drivers’ Federation took a firm stance, submitting a 12-point memorandum to the district administration outlining their objections to the amended law under the Indian Judicial Code of 2023. The federation decried the severe penalties of a decade-long imprisonment and hefty fines imposed on drivers involved in accidents, labeling it a "black law" that they adamantly oppose. Union representatives declared that the strike would persist until the contentious law is withdrawn.

The response of the administration to the drivers' demands remains uncertain. Should the strike endure, it is anticipated to affect essential supplies such as food grains, healthcare services, children's education, business operations, and fuel availability.

Criticism has been directed at the new regulations which entail stringent punishments, including a 10-year imprisonment sentence and a Rs 7 lakh fine for drivers found guilty in accidents. The drivers’ union expressed its intent to peacefully protest for three days, urging the government to reconsider the law. However, if their demands are not met, the union warned of escalating their protests after the initial peaceful demonstration.

Rao Uday Pratap Singh, the State Transport Minister, urged truck and bus drivers to cease the strike and engage in dialogue. He emphasized that strikes are not the solution and advocated for open communication channels to prevent disruptions for the general public.

The situation continues to evolve as both sides stand firm on their positions, leaving the resolution of the dispute uncertain.
