Dry eye is a common eye disorder that happens when your eye doesn't produce enough tears or the right quality of tears to keep your eyes healthy and comfortable. Tears are needed to help keep enough moisture in your eyes. As you get older, you're more at risk of suffering from chronic dry eye, especially if you're going through menopause.

Here are some ways you can prevent this.

  • Your eyes need rest too. Too much reading or watching television makes your eyes dry. Blink more or take frequent breaks. This allows your eyes to retain its moisture back.
  • While stepping out of the house, make sure you have sunglasses on to protect your eyes from the sun which dries up the eyes.
  • Include fatty acids in your diet. Omega – 3 is very effective and relives symptoms of dry eyes. It reduces the inflammation, giving space for more tear production and high quality tears. Apart from omega – 3, you can use soyabean oil, palm oil, flaxseed oil, walnuts, tuna, sardines and mackerel.
  • Avoid cigarette smoke as it irritates the dry eye even more. Whether it is you or even second-hand smoke could be bad for dry eyes.
  • Use eye drops or ointments that give you relief. This will give you temporary relief. These drops have preservatives which could react badly. So, look for preservative-free drops, just in case.
  • Avoid wearing these as these are a major cause for dry eyes. If you have to wear them, take them off as soon as you get home to give your eyes rest.
