On Monday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with Sri Lankan Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa to discuss Colombo's economic situation and India's supporting response. On Sunday, Jaishankar landed in Colombo for a bilateral visit.

The visit began with a meeting with Finance Minister @RealBRajapaksa (Basil Rajapaksa). The economic crisis was discussed, as well as India's supporting response. In a Tweet, Jaishankar said, "We shall continue to be led by Neighbourhood First." Due to a lack of foreign exchange, the island nation is experiencing a severe economic and energy crisis.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) suggested a series of steps for Sri Lanka's macroeconomic stability, as well as to offset negative effects on the vulnerable and poor, on Friday. The IMF stated that the country is facing increasing challenges, including unsustainable public debt, low foreign currency reserves, and considerable financing needs in the coming years.

Jaishankar will also attend the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) meeting during his bilateral visit. On Sunday evening, four Sri Lankan ministers met with India's External Affairs Minister at the airport.

At the airport, Gamini Lokuge, the Minister of Energy, Johnston Fernando, the Minister of Highways, Prasanna Ranatunga, the Minister of Tourism, and DV Chanaka, the State Minister of Aviation and Export Zones Development, greeted Jaishankar. From March 28 to March 30, Jaishankar will be in Sri Lanka.
