EAM Jaishankar wishes Republic of Chad people on their I-Day

NEW DELHI: S Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, sent greetings to the government and people of the Republic of Chad, on the occasion of their Independence Day on Thursday. "Greetings to Foreign Minister Cherif Mahamat Zene and the Government and People of Chad on the occasion of their Independence Day," Jaishankar wrote on Twitter.

India and Chad's relationship has significantly improved. The Republic of Chad and India have highly friendly relations, and India is well-liked and esteemed there. Since 2011, there have been more bilateral visits and high-level exchanges between India and Chad, leading to increased high-level connections and cooperation.

India's High Commission in Abuja, Nigeria, is also accredited to the Chad. A honorary consulate of India is also present in N'Djamena. A resident embassy for Chad was established in New Delhi in 2019. Nagoum Yamassoum, a former Deputy Prime Minister of Chad and Minister of Foreign Affairs, came to New Delhi in March 2005 to take part in the inaugural meeting of the India-Africa Project Partnership. He is the first representative of the Chadian administration to travel there.

In October 2015, former president Itno led a group of 32 people to New Delhi for the third India-Africa Forum Summit. On October 28, Itno and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had private discussions. With the visit of Pahimi Padacke Albert, the former prime minister of Chad, to India in March 2018 to attend the Solar Summit and the International Solar Alliance's (ISA) Founding Conference in New Delhi on March 11, the relations have recently improved. On the sidelines of ISA, he had a private meeting with the Indian Prime Minister.

The Republic of Chad has been a recipient of many of Indian assistance programmes. In 2004, the Indian government gave 5,000 metric tonnes of rice to Chad. Under the TEAM-9 programme, India supplied Chad with lines of credit totaling USD 50 million for five manufacturing enterprises.
