Embarking on a significant diplomatic mission, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will commence a four-day official visit to Tanzania today. This momentous trip, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), is aimed at fostering high-level discussions and co-chairing the 10th Joint Commission Meeting with his Tanzanian counterpart.

During his stay, Jaishankar will engage with key leaders of the East African nation, partake in a reception hosted aboard the esteemed Indian Naval Ship Trishul, and address the Indian diaspora. Additionally, he will have the honor of inaugurating the bust of Swami Vivekananda, symbolizing the rich cultural ties between India and Tanzania.

Following this, from July 7 to 8, the EAM will visit the captivating city of Dar-es-Salaam, where he will conduct the 10th India-Tanzania Joint Commission Meeting with his counterpart. In Dar-es-Salaam, he will also pay courtesy calls on the country's top leadership, including several Cabinet rank Ministers, to strengthen bilateral relations.

Prior to his visit to Dar-es-Salaam, Jaishankar will begin his journey by visiting Zanzibar from July 5 to 6. During this time, he will inspect a significant water supply project funded by the Government of India through a line of credit. The EAM will also hold crucial meetings with prominent leaders in Zanzibar and join in a reception aboard the Indian Naval Ship Trishul, which is currently docked in Tanzania.

Within the framework of this visit, Jaishankar will engage with the members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group for India, inaugurating an India-Tanzania business meeting. Furthermore, he will address the Indian diaspora and officiate the inauguration of the Swami Vivekananda bust in Dar es Salaam.

In a remarkable development in the field of education, the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is planning to establish its first overseas campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania, known as IIT Madras at Zanzibar. This prestigious campus is set to commence its operations in October 2023, enrolling an initial batch of 50 undergraduate students and 20 master's students. With this initiative, Zanzibar will join the ranks of Abu Dhabi and Kuala Lumpur as one of the three international campuses of IIT.

Earlier this year, India and Tanzania convened the second edition of the Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting in Arusha, Tanzania, on June 28 and 29. During this meeting, the two countries engaged in constructive discussions aimed at bolstering security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The Ministry of Defence emphasized the focus on enhancing cooperation in this strategically significant maritime area.
