Ranchi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Jharkhand Minister Alamgir Alam in connection with the recovery of "unaccounted cash" amounting to over Rs 37 crore from the premises of the house help of his personal secretary. Alamgir Alam, a senior Congress MLA and the Rural Development Minister in Jharkhand, has been asked to appear before the agency on May 14 at its zonal office in Ranchi.

The Enforcement Directorate conducted raids on the apartment of Jahangir Alam, the house help of Alam's personal secretary, Sanjeev Lal, on Monday, May 6. During the raid, over Rs 37 crore in cash was recovered. Both Alam and Lal were subsequently arrested. The cash haul was part of raids conducted at multiple locations in Ranchi by the probe agency. The recovered unaccounted cash, mostly in the denomination of Rs 500, was being counted using several counting machines. Additionally, the agency officials found some jewellery at Jahangir Alam's flat.

Alamgir Alam, a 70-year-old Congress leader, represents the Pakur seat in the Jharkhand State Assembly. These raids were conducted in connection with an ongoing investigation into a money laundering case involving Virendra K Ram, the former chief engineer of the Jharkhand Rural Development Department, who was arrested last year. The case is linked to alleged irregularities in the implementation of certain departmental schemes.

The money laundering case against Virendra K Ram originated from a complaint filed by the Jharkhand anti-corruption bureau (ACB). Later, the Enforcement Directorate took over the case under the Prevention of Money Laundering (PMLA) Act.
