New Delhi: As the Lok Sabha elections approach in a few months, the Election Commission of India has initiated a two-day conference with the Chief Electoral Officers from all States and Union Territories to assess the preparedness for the upcoming polls. The conference, which commenced in New Delhi at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM), will focus on reviewing readiness for the General Elections scheduled later this year. The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), along with senior EC HQ officials and CEOs, is actively participating in the meeting. With just six months remaining until the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, political parties have already initiated campaign plans to engage with voters.

In the 2019 general elections, the BJP made history by securing a record 303 seats out of 542, while the Congress managed only 52 seats. Narendra Modi, the first non-Congress full majority Prime Minister to be re-elected, achieved this with a stronger majority. As discussions unfold between INDIA partners to finalize a seat-sharing agreement for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, BJP national president JP Nadda visited Guwahati on Tuesday to preside over crucial party meetings in the state. However, seat-sharing remains a major point of contention within the INDIA bloc.

The allocation of seats for the general elections holds particular significance for the Congress, especially after facing significant defeats in the assembly elections in key states like Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan. The conference serves as a pivotal platform for assessing and enhancing the electoral preparedness of the Election Commission and state officials as the nation gears up for the democratic exercise.
