New Delhi: Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa has resigned from his post. He has been appointed as Vice President in Asian Development Bank (ADB). He will replace Diwakar Gupta in ADB. Diwakar Gupta's term ends on 31 August. Lavasa was appointed as the Commissioner of Elections in January 2018.

Ashok Lavasa will be the second such commissioner in the history of the Election Commission, who has to resign before he can complete his term. Prior to Ashok Lavasa, Chief Election Commissioner Nagendra Singh resigned in 1973 when he was appointed a judge in an international judicial court. If all goes well, Lavasa would have become the Chief Election Commissioner in April 2021 and by October 2022 would have held assembly elections in several states including UP, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal.

Ashok has an MBA degree from Southern Cross University in Australia, and an M Phill degree in Defense and Strategic Studies from Madras University. He has completed his BA Honors in English and Post Graduation in English Literature from Delhi University. He has previously served in important positions including India's Union Finance Secretary, Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
