Kolkata: The Election Commission has taken action against Narendranath Chakraborty, MLA of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) from Pandavashwar in West Bengal. The Election Commission has banned them for threatening the voters. Chakraborty has been banned from March 30 to April 6, 2022, for any public meeting, rally, roadshow or interview in connection with the ongoing by-election in West Bengal.

The Election Commission has directed the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal to register an FIR under Section 123(2) of the RP Act and Sections 171-C and 171-F of the IPC against Trinamool MLA Chakraborty for intimidating voters. It may be recalled that a video of TMC MLA Narendranath Chakraborty had gone viral on social media, in which he was seen threatening BJP supporters. In the video, he had said, "Hardcore BJP supporters, who cannot be influenced – they should be threatened. Tell them that if they cast their votes, we will understand that they have voted for the BJP.''

The TMC MLA had said, "When the elections are over, after that, the BJP supporters will stay in the state at their own risk. Yes, if they don't vote, we will understand that they have supported us. Only then will they be able to live peacefully in Bengal. Then you can do your business and jobs by staying here. Is that clear?'' BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari said Narendra Nath Chakraborty's assembly constituency falls under the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency, where elections are due in two weeks. The BJP had complained to the Election Commission about the video. State BJP co-incharge Amit Malviya had said that Chakraborty should be in jail. Mamata Banerjee is patronising them. Let us know that, the by-election to the Asansol Lok Sabha seat in Bengal is on April 12. Along with this, by-elections are also being held in four assembly seats.
