Billionaire Elon Musk, owner of xAI, announced on Tuesday that his company's AI chatbot, Grok, will soon be accessible to all X premium users. This development comes amidst escalating tensions between Musk and his former company, OpenAI. Musk recently filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, alleging a deviation from the startup's original mission of creating AI for the betterment of humanity.
OpenAI and its primary offering, ChatGPT, have been under Musk's scrutiny since the lawsuit, with Musk branding the San Francisco-based startup as "closed AI". Musk's xAI has also followed suit by open-sourcing Grok AI under the Apache 2.0 license, joining the ranks of Meta and Mistral.
What is Grok and how can it be used?
Grok AI, launched by Musk in November last year, serves as an alternative to popular chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini (formerly Bard). Inspired by Douglas Adams' sci-fi novel, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," Grok is designed to provide answers with a touch of humor and a rebellious attitude. Previously, Grok was accessible only through an X Premium+ subscription, priced at Rs.1,300 per month or Rs.13,600 per year.
Now, users with an X Premium subscription, costing Rs.650 per month or Rs.6,800 per year, will also have access to Grok AI. However, Musk has not yet confirmed whether all X users will eventually be able to use Grok AI, similar to accessing ChatGPT version 3.5.
According to a TechCrunch report, Musk's decision to grant access to Grok for all premium subscribers could be aimed at bolstering X's subscriber base, given reports of declining usage. Data from Sensor Tower indicates an 18% year-on-year decrease in X usage in the US in February, with a 23% decline since Musk assumed control of the company.
