Elon Musk, the owner of X, has announced a new initiative to provide Premium and Premium+ subscriptions for free to users with a certain number of verified followers. This move aims to enhance the user experience on the platform.
Under the Premium subscription, users will enjoy benefits such as reduced ads and the ability to apply for revenue sharing. Meanwhile, the Premium+ subscription offers additional perks, including ad-free timelines and prioritized replies.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk stated, "Starting now, all X accounts with over 2500 verified followers will receive Premium features for free, and those with over 5000 followers will receive Premium+ for free."
Musk's decision to offer these subscriptions for free comes after his acquisition of X in October 2022. Initially, Musk had implemented a subscription model to generate revenue for the platform. This included discontinuing the free blue tick verification for notable figures and introducing a premium subscription that granted users access to the verification badge.
However, with declining advertising revenue and user numbers, Musk seems to have reconsidered his approach. Recent data from Sensor Tower shows a 15% decrease in X's user base year-on-year as of February 2024, with a 23% decline since Musk took over the platform.
While X has not officially stated the reasons behind Musk's change of strategy, it is clear that providing free access to Premium subscriptions is aimed at revitalizing user engagement and retaining its user base.
