Doha: During a meeting in Kazakhstan on the eve of a summit on Thursday, Qatar's Emir and Russian President Vladimir Putin talked about the Ukraine crisis and its effects on energy markets.

According to the office, the impact of the conflict on food security, as well as the status of the Libya, Syria and Iran nuclear talks, was also the subject of talks between Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and Putin.

A source with knowledge of the discussions said on Wednesday that the meeting was aimed at de-escalating tensions between Russia and Qatar, which have escalated since the Ukraine crisis earlier this year.

Qatar, a major gas exporter, has attempted to take a largely neutral stance in the conflict, but recent actions by the Gulf Arab nation, such as criticism of Russia's annexation of Ukraine's territory, have angered Moscow, the source said. Told. Told.

The source claimed that Qatar "needs friendly relations with Russia and others in the region" to continue acting as a conflict-mediator.
