The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is engaged in the development of hypersonic missiles for the Indian security forces. Under this initiative, the Indian Army is planning to induct long-range cruise and ballistic missiles, including the 2000-km range Nirbhay and the 400-km range Pralay missile.

Army's long-range capabilities

Director General of the Artillery Regiment of the Indian Army, Lieutenant General A Kumar, said that the army is also working on a long-range rocket system. Under this, a plan has been made to increase the range of the indigenous Pinaka rocket to 300 kilometers. This step is important to strengthen the strategic capability of the army, which will enable it to face the threats located on its borders. Lieutenant General Kumar said that approval has been received from the Defense Acquisition Council for the acquisition of Pralay ballistic missile and Nirbhay missiles. He also clarified that the development work of hypersonic missiles is being done rapidly by DRDO. Research is going on to improve the range, accuracy, and firepower of these missiles.

Accuracy and firepower of ammunition

Many improvements are being made in the army to increase the accuracy and lethality of ammunition. Lieutenant General Kumar said that the army is continuously working with the private and government sectors to develop sensor fused munitions (SFM), extended range ammunition using ramjet and course correctable fuse (CCF). Apart from this, state-of-the-art equipment like loiter munition, swarm drones and runway independent RPAS are being procured to further enhance accuracy.

Training in real operational situations

In view of the current operational situation on the northern borders, the Army has decided to incorporate real operational conditions in its training curriculum. Emphasis is also being laid on training specialised technical equipment such as swarm drones and Runway Independent RPAS, so that the Army personnel can make better use of these cutting-edge technologies.

Inclusion of women officers

So far, 19 women officers have been commissioned in the Artillery Regiment. They have been deployed in units with different equipment and geographical conditions. Lieutenant General Kumar expressed confidence that these women officers will excel in their careers, which is a positive sign for the Army.

Lieutenant General Kumar said that the Indian Army has learned many important lessons from the Russia-Ukraine war. This conflict has made it clear that it is necessary to focus on technological, strategic, and operational innovations to face future challenges. The development of hypersonic and other advanced missile systems will play an important role in enhancing India's defense capabilities.
