New Delhi: Congress working president Sonia Gandhi is battling coronavirus infection. Meanwhile, it is reported that he is unlikely to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The investigating agency had summoned her for questioning in a money laundering case related to the National Herald newspaper. However, the party had earlier said that Sonia would appear before the investigating agency on the scheduled day.

According to media reports, party leaders said that Sonia is unlikely to appear before the ED on Wednesday. Just last week, the Congress had said that Sonia has succumbed to the coronavirus and had isolated herself. Some Congress leaders, including KC Venugopal, were also reported to be infected. According to the report, Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala had on Thursday, June 2, said that Sonia Gandhi was corona positive, though she would appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on June 8 in connection with the probe into the money laundering allegations related to the National Herald case.

It is reported that a concession will be sought from the agency citing the health reasons of Sonia Gandhi. Interestingly, the date of former party chief Rahul Gandhi's appearance has been changed earlier. He will appear before the ED on the 13th. The ED had earlier asked Rahul to appear before it on June 2, but he had sought a new date due to his exit from the country.

What is the National Herald case?

BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy had levelled baseless allegations against Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, late leader Motilal Vora, journalist Suman Dubey and technocrat Sam Pitroda in the National Herald case. He alleged that it was wrongfully acquired through Young India Ltd and that Congress leaders grabbed assets up to Rs 2,000 crore. The investigation into the case was initiated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in 2014. The Congress has been saying that the aim of Young India Limited is not to make a profit but it has been formed for charity.
