Kolkata: West Bengal CM and Trinamool Congress (TMC) Mamata Banerjee's nephew and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee has been summoned by the central probe agency Enforcement Directorate (ED). According to the report, the ED summoned Abhishek for questioning on September 2 in the coal scam case. He is likely to appear at the office in Kolkata. Interestingly, Mamata and Abhishek had recently questioned central agencies.

The ED also questioned Abhishek in March in this case. The names of some IPS officers of Bengal had also cropped up in this case. According to the report, TMC youth leader Vinay Mishra and local coal operator Anoop Manjhi are the main accused in the scam. It is being told that both of them are close to Abhishek. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had already started an investigation into the coal scam, along with the ED investigation is also going on. In November 2020, the CBI registered a case alleging that illegally mined coal worth thousands of crores of rupees was being sold in the black market for years. The CBI had alleged that the work was going on with the help of a racket operating in the western part of West Bengal, where Eastern Coalfields Limited runs several mines.

On February 21, 2021, the CBI team reached Abhishek's residence and summoned his wife Rujira and relative Maneka Gambhir. Based on the FIR filed by the CBI in November 2020, the ED had registered a case under the provisions of the PMLA. The ED had claimed that MP Abhishek Banerjee had amassed money from this illegal business.
