London: Former England captain Ted Dexter passed away today at the age of 86. Ted, a brilliant middle-order batsman, and medium-pacer played 62 Tests for England. He also captained the team in 30 matches. Dexter scored 4,502 runs and picked up 62 wickets for his country. He played first-class cricket from 1956 to 1968 and scored more than 21,000 runs and also took 419 wickets.
In 1965, he suffered a leg injury while pushing his broken car and this affected his game. However, returning from this, he took part in the 1968 Ashes series. He is also known as 'Lord Ted.' Not only in cricket, but Ted also tried his luck in politics and in 1964 he decided to contest in the UK general election as a candidate. He became the candidate from the Cardiff South-East seat. The most surprising thing in this was that for this election, he had distanced himself from the tour of South Africa. However, he suffered a crushing defeat in the election.
He scored 481 runs in the 1962-1963 Ashes series as England captain, the highest run scored by any English captain in Australia. In the 1959-60 series, he scored 526 runs against the West Indies. Ted's best innings include 70 runs off 75 balls against the West Indies.
