EPFO Introduces Policy for Hiring Retired Employees on Contract Basis

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced a new policy to hire retired officers and employees on a contract basis. This initiative aims to fill existing vacancies in various cadres where specialized skills are needed, which the current workforce may lack.

EPFO stated, "To ensure continuity in our operations despite personnel shortages or lack of specific competencies, we have introduced provisions to hire retired officers and employees."

The decision comes as a response to delays in the traditional hiring process and the need for specialized expertise. The Executive Committee of EPFO approved this policy in October 2023.

Under this policy, contracts will initially be for one year, with the possibility of extension for another year. In exceptional cases, for tasks requiring expertise beyond the age of superannuation (62 years), contracts may be extended for up to three more years, not exceeding 65 years of age, based on performance reviews.

EPFO emphasized that such hiring should only occur when absolutely necessary for official duties, and should not replace regular staff for routine tasks.

"This approach ensures that these appointments are not routine and are kept to a minimum," EPFO added.

The new policy is expected to streamline operations and ensure efficient management of EPFO's functions.
