Foodgrains storage can be a serious challenge amidst estimates of heavy yields of wheat and other crops in the current Rabi season. Apart from this, the government's forehead has started to be stressed. In addition, up to 75 percent of the storage capacity may be filled with old grain by the day of the start of the rabi season procurement. In view of this, other storage options are being considered. The Union Food Ministry is constantly conveying its concerns to the Prime Minister's Office. Apart from this, the proposal to relax the prescribed conditions for the sale of wheat in the open market is also considered inadequate. On one hand, the government has talked about the use of some of the empty warehouses and sheds on the railway, but the experts have rejected them. Also, the use of these godowns is not capable of storing grains.

Similarly, a draft has also not been agreed to sell in the open market by cutting about one and a half rupees per kg. Earlier this year, the central pool had a total of 56.5 million tonnes of food grains. With this, about 75 lakh tonnes of food grains will be required for the Public Distribution System (PDS) in the next three months. Despite reducing it, the old grain will be only a lot. As a matter of fact, the government is required to have a total of 21.4 million tonnes of food grains on the first January every year in the form of buffer stock. It should have 1.64 million tonnes of operation stock and 5 million tonnes of strategic stock.

On January 1 this year, the central agencies have 319 million tonnes of foodgrain in the pool and 24.5 million tonnes of food grains with the state agencies. Apart from this, the food stock of the pool is 2.37 million tonnes of rice and 33.2 million tonnes of wheat. Lack of storage facilities with central and state agencies may hamper their wheat procurement. According to sources, in such a situation temporary storage can be arranged, which can be done by covering the tarpaulin in the open. The most difficult is facing the wheat producing states. In Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh, the central pool of grain are lying.
