UNITED NATIONS Fighting in northern Ethiopia's Afar region has increased humanitarian needs and hampered assistance delivery into neighbouring Tigray, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

According to regional officials referenced by OCHA, more than 200,000 people have been displaced as a result of recent hostilities in Afar. Fighting has also made it difficult for the UN and its partners to perform assessments; however, people who have been displaced are thought to be in desperate need of help.

According to OCHA, over 40,000 individuals have gotten food in accessible areas of Afar in the last week, and over 420,000 people have received food since mid-October.

Due to instability in Afar, humanitarian aid deliveries to Tigray along the Semera-Abala-Mekelle road have been halted. Due to a scarcity of supplies and gasoline, the UN and its partners have discontinued or drastically reduced initiatives, according to the report.

Reduced levels of food aid have been supplied to displaced people and host communities in Shire throughout the last week.Over 80% of people in assessed areas were food insecure, with nearly 40% facing extreme food insecurity, according to a World Food Programme food security assessment released last week.

Drought conditions in other parts of Ethiopia, as well as neighbouring Somalia and Kenya, are increasing humanitarian demands, according to OCHA.
