New Delhi: Former Chief Justice of India (retd) Justice JS Khehar has made a big statement on religious conversions, saying that even today Sikhism is facing the same challenges as it was during the era of Bhai Vir Singh. Speaking at the inaugural function of a two-day international conference to mark the 150th birth anniversary of renowned Sikh scholar Bhai Vir Singh, Justice Khehar said Sikhism was facing the same three challenges of Bhai Vir Singh's time that he too faced.

The former CJI presented modernization, mythology, and conversion as major challenges for the Sikh community. He said, 'Bhai Vir Singh is as relevant even today as he was in his era. The more we learn from him, the more we will be able to deal with the struggles we are currently facing.' The 150th birth anniversary of Bhai Vir Singh is being celebrated by the Bhai Vir Singh Sahitya Sadan (BVSS) Society in collaboration with the Sahitya Akademi, Delhi, and the Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College at the North Campus of Delhi University. The Sikh scholar was born in 1872 and died in 1957.

Former CJI Khehar, citing Britannica Encyclopaedia in relation to Bhai Vir Singh, said, 'He wrote this at a time when Sikhism, politics and Punjabi language were being severely attacked by the British and Sikhs began to doubt the value of their way of life. Justice Khehar said that with his versatile pen, Bhai Vir Singh praised the courage, philosophy and ideals of the Sikhs.
