Guwahati: In a concerted move to tackle the issue of illegal encroachment, the district administration and the forest department jointly conducted an eviction drive on January 10 in Assam's Goalpara district. The operation specifically targeted 50 families residing in the Pancharatna Reserve Forest area, where they had encroached upon forest land by constructing unauthorized houses and various other structures. The move comes as part of a broader strategy to address the persistent challenge of illegal land occupation in the region.

Tejas Mariswamy, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) overseeing Goalpara district, highlighted the ongoing commitment of the administration and the forest department to actively counter instances of illegal encroachment in the area. The eviction initiative is a proactive measure to mitigate the rising incidents of human-elephant conflicts, which have been exacerbated by unauthorized settlements encroaching upon forested territories. The successful execution of this eviction drive reflects a comprehensive approach aimed at curbing illegal activities and fostering harmonious coexistence between local communities and wildlife.

Mariswamy further emphasized that the Pancharatna Reserve Forest eviction is just one facet of a broader strategy, indicating that additional eviction drives are in the pipeline for Goalpara district. These concerted efforts are essential not only for protecting the integrity of forest ecosystems but also for mitigating potential conflicts between humans and elephants, ensuring the sustainable balance of the region's environmental landscape.
