Excise policy scam: Delhi govt ignored recommendations of expert Panel

NEW DELHI: going on its tirade against Aam Admi Party (AAP) over the "excise policy scam", the BJP on Tuesday alleged that its Delhi government had ignored recommendations of an expert committee and the excise policy.

The Delhi Excise Policy states that producers, retailers, and distributors of alcohol cannot be the same; however, it was broken, according to BJP national spokesperson and Rajya Sabha member Sudhanshu Trivedi, who spoke at a press conference alongside Lok Sabha member Pravesh Sahib Singh Verma at party headquarters here.

"Accordingly the Delhi excise policy also says there cannot be common directors or shareholders," Trivedi said. He asserted that the Delhi Excise Department had brought some cases of common producers, retailers, and distributors to the attention of the government on October 25, 2021, but that the government had taken no action.

An expert group had advised against using incentives to drive up alcohol sales, said BJP Lok Sabha member Verma from West Delhi, but the Delhi government started offering a carton for free with every carton sold.

Verma pointed out that the expert committee had also recommended adopting the wholesale business model from Karnataka and that no person could be granted more than one licence.

"The expert panel had also recommended against the opening of liquor vends in non-conforming locations without commercial markets. But the Delhi government ignored all these suggestions," Verma alleged.
