PUNE: Former President Pratibha Patil's husband Devisingh Shekhawat died at the age of 89 at a private hospital in Pune, following a heart attack, sources close to the family said. He was admitted to the hospital a few days back, they said. "He died at 9 am today due to a heart attack," a source said.  He is survived by wife Pratibha Patil and two children - a son and a daughter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences. On the demise of Dr. Devisingh Shekhawat Ji, my thoughts are with our former president Smt. Pratibha Patil Ji and her family. He left a lasting legacy  on society through his several volunteer activities. He tweeted, "Om Shanti. 

Sharad Pawar, leader of the NCP, also mourned Shekhawat's passing. Extremely saddened by Shri Devisingh Ransingh Shekhawat ji's passing, a senior Congress leader and distinguished agriculturalist. The veteral leader served as Amaravati's first mayor and provided Smt. Pratibha Tai with a solid network of support while serving as the country's first gentleman, Pawar tweeted.

Ram Nath Kovind, former president, expressed shock when learning of Dr. Devisingh Shekhawat's passing. Ram Nath Kovind tweeted, "My condolences with Smt Pratibha Singh Patil ji and her family in this hour of bereavement.
