New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will leave on a four-day visit to the Maldives and Sri Lanka from today till March 30 following an invitation from his counterparts. According to the information, Jaishankar will arrive in the Maldives today for a two-day visit from March 26 to 27, after which he will be on a three-day visit to Sri Lanka from March 28, in which he will also attend the BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting on March 29.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the External Affairs Minister will visit the Maldivian city of Addu, during which he will meet President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and also meet his Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Shahid. Let us know that a number of agreements related to bilateral development cooperation are likely to be signed during the visit of the External Affairs Minister. During this time, he will also launch a number of schemes, which will be India-backed projects. According to the ministry, India will boost its cooperation in the socio-economic development of Maldives and will also focus on enhancing its security.

Jaishankar's visit to Sri Lanka, which begins on March 28, is to be followed by the visits of Sri Lankan Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa to India in December last year and Sri Lankan Foreign Minister GL Peiris earlier this month. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the bilateral meetings and interactions of the External Affairs Minister in Sri Lanka demonstrate the priority that Sri Lanka holds for India. On this, the ministry said that both 'Maldives and Sri Lanka' are India's main maritime neighbours in the Indian Ocean region and have a special place in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'Sagar' and Neighbourhood First, due to which India is committed to enhancing its cooperation in Sri Lanka.
